Description:
ZANZIBAR – The Spice Island

This tiny tropical paradise on the west coast of Tanzania has much more to offer than its size would indicate. Known as The Spice Island (it was once the world’s largest producer of cloves), Zanzibar was the chief port on the East African coast during the early 19th Century – although for hundreds of years before that, the island had lured travelers from the Middle East, Asia and other parts of Africa, all of whom added to the island’s culture.

The Island of Zanzibar consists of two main islands, Pemba and Ungunja with some 50 smaller islands surrounding the archipelago. It is still the best-kept secret in the Indian Ocean, with its fascinating historical ‘Stone Town’ and magnificent beaches.

The beaches in Zanzibar are a paradise, interspersed with picturesque fishing villages, where the people live a simple life, unchanged over years. The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade. They can be seen in the plantations just outside Zanzibar town and a good tour includes opportunities to dazzle the senses with fresh spices.

Places of Interest: You can explore the spice and fruit plantations and visit Jozani Forest Nature Reserve which is home to the last remaining colony of the red Colobus Monkey; David Livingston’s house (one of Africa’s greatest explorers, the ruins of the Maruhabi Palace, constructed by Sultan Said Bargash between 1880 and 1882 as a harem to accommodate his concubines. Best of all is Stone Town – the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, one of the most fascinating places on Africa’s east coast. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.

Best Buys: Zanzibar and especially Stone Town, is a shopper’s paradise. The narrow winding streets are lined with stores selling local crafts, antiques, jewellery, clothes, books and spices.

Out and about: Moored in Stone Town’s enchanting harbour, the Dhow Restaurant recreates the Zanzibar of ages past, when dhows were the only link between the archipelago and the world beyond. Beautifully restored from a working dhow, handcrafted on Pemba Island, it is now anchored opposite the old Sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders and the bustling colour of Forodhani Gardens.

Sporting attractions: For water sports enthusiasts, the coral reefs and open sea between Zanzibar and Pemba are justly famous for the quality of their snorkeling, scuba diving and big game fishing. Windsurfing, kayaking, water-skiing and sailing on traditional local dhows – Zanzibar really does have something for everyone
